Local charity, Positive Action on Cancer, turns 21 with a bang

Local charity Positive Action on Cancer (PAC) celebrated turning 21 on Saturday 7th November with a spectacular fireworks ball at The Enchanted Walled Garden at Orchardleigh House.

The charity reports, “150 guests turned up to help PAC celebrate, and the atmosphere was electric. Guests enjoyed arriving to a string quartet, followed by a five-course meal, an exciting auction, fireworks and a disco.

“The event was supported by local businesses who acted as sponsors or donated auction prizes and a special thank you goes to all the staff at Orchardleigh who not only donated the venue, but who also provided a huge amount of support to make the event possible.”

PAC, who provide emotional support to children, young people and adults affected by cancer and other life-threatening conditions in Bath and North East Somerset, Somerset and Wiltshire have gone from strength to strength since starting 21 years ago.

PAC now provides services in hospitals and the community in Bath, Frome, Trowbridge, Warminster, Yeovil and Weston-Super-Mare and  will soon be expanding their service into Street and Glastonbury.

This year alone PAC has seen a 70% increase in the numbers of referrals of people wishing to use the service, and due to Children in Need funding, the charity has been able to increase its children and young people’s service by 20%.

Recent expansion includes the use of new technology with the launch of online counselling, with the hope to reach even more people who desperately need the service, but cannot make it to a counselling venue.

PAC receives no central government funding and in the past two years has suffered from a large decrease in the amount of funding it receives from grant making trusts. This means PAC relies heavily on the support of the local community and Saturday was a good opportunity to say thank you to all those who make their work possible.

Hannah Culff, fundraising and communications manager at PAC said, “Turning 21 felt like a huge moment for PAC. PAC has come such a long way since it started 21 years ago and we are so proud of all it’s achieved.

“We couldn’t be more grateful for the support we get from the local community who are simply phenomenal, and we thank everyone who came to the ball to support us again.

“People come to PAC at the darkest of times and often when they have absolutely nowhere else to turn. Clients often refer to us as a lifeline. You only need to answer the phone for a morning to see how vital our service is and how much need there is out there for us to be providing a bigger service.”
