Frome Canoe Club’s presentation evening

Frome Canoe Club held its annual Social and Presentation night on Saturday 16th January at the clubhouse.

It was well attended with over 65 members and their families coming to celebrate the successes of canoeists in the year 2015.

Andy Vowell, the Chairman began the presentations by thanking all the volunteers who have given their time so willingly to provide a sporting activity for Frome and surrounding areas. 2015 had been an exceptional year for the club with many individual successes and a steady growth in participation and activity.

It was especially pleasing to see the efforts of so many young people being rewarded. Ben Nicol was awarded the very prestigious Bayman award for his performance in the National Series of Canoe Slalom where he is currently ranked in Division One in two separate classes – Kayak and Canoe.

Two young people, Aimee Collins and Jos Maxey, were awarded the Langham Trophy for their stunning performances in the canoe slalom competition at Rode in June last year. The Youth Cup went to Jacob Lines for the significant progress he has made during the year. And finally, Kyra Brake was recognised for the amazing work she has done coaching other young people, and she was awarded the Ivor Morgan trophy.

Other trophies were awarded as follows: Tim Snook for overall performance in the adult category; Alan Carpenter for his outstanding contribution to coaching adults during the year; Kath Norton for her contribution to the Newsletter and Terry O’Neill received the Volunteers Cup for his exceptional support and dedication to the Club.

The President of the Club, Graham Warnecke, who was one of the founder members with Bob Hinton in 1976, ended the awards ceremony by announcing that the club would be celebrating its 40th year in 2016 and was planning to have an event on Saturday 3rd September for all past and present members to join in.
